Description

Well, I dunno if this is a tutorial but I think the category "Tutorial" fits best.
If there is someone who has to say something about what I wrote and did, feel free to tell me my faults or whatever. :D

ADDITIONAL INFO: I reprocessed it all, taking great care about using 16 bit per channel (although the raws have just 8 bits per channel). It turned out, that the stack of the shots taken using a low ASA number got much better (like I expected ). I assume now it's proven, that the only important thing is the total exposure. However, taking just one image ist still bad, like I describes above.
At least the Nikon D100 doesn't introduce more noise at high ASA numbers.

MORE ADDITIONAL INFO:
Don't take the raw images in tif format! My Nikon D100 features only 8 bit tifs, but the Nikon raw format features 12 bit per channel. I was too stupid to notice that the raw format is better in any case.
However, if your cam is able to save 16 bit tiffs, it should be ok, but these are really big. Read my theory about why a 12 bit raw is smaller than an 8 bit tiff although, of course, it contains much more image information (namely 16 times as much) - just if you are interested  : [link]

Apologies for my late comment Sven!!

Words can't describe how awesome I think this piece of work is!! It really is top drawer stuff!! Full respect for the time and effort you put into this, not only for your own benefit but also for the benefit of astrophotographers like myself!! This is really worth knowing!!

I must confess, I've never carried out a dark frame subtraction, that's because I don't know how  I do all my processing in ps and I'm not sure how to do it in this program! Regarding hot pixels, i just use the clone tool in ps to brush over them ;) Take a bit of black from space, then dab it over that naughty pixel :P

I must try registar, I can't stack in registax, it won't take large RAW files, have you had the same problem? Stracking manually in ps is very time consuming!!

Once again, thanks for posting this gem and clear skies!! :)
