Description

How to build a focuser with parts from the original EQ6 mount.

My EQ6 is modded with better electronics and drives, so there was no use for the original parts anymore.
I'm trying to resurrect my main hobby, the practical astrophotography, and therefore got a new camera.
To get the most out of it I came up with the idea of this motoric focuser. It has 2 purpouses:

1. focusing without touching the telescope -> no shaking and you can have the eye on the screen to check the focus
2. precise focusing - it should be at least as precise then with my own hands, I haven't tested it yet, but with the slowest speed it should do pretty well

Notes: This is just how I did it, uploaded mainly to show it to friends. The instructions are not very precise, so if you plan to do this with you own EQ6 then you'll have to find out where to place every little screw by yourself.

3) kardanian joint from an RC store - I wouldn't recommend skipping this one, even if you plan to have a straight axis
4) of course you have to drill into the focuser and cut a thread into the holes - I used 3 M3 screws; the steel bar was formed using a driller and an angle grinder
9) the EQ6 electronic is designed for 12 Volts, but even a nearly empty 9 Volts Battery can power the dec. drive and shift around heavy equipment - I left the original power connector in place so I'm not dependant on the battery; however, forgetting to detach the 9 Volts battery while putting a 12 Volts jack in won't be very good, so use *either* *or*, not both together
15) yeah I know, my case is not the greatest one, but it does it's job and the battery perfectly with between the 2 woods without falling off
17) the stepper drive is pretty strong, even at 7 Volts (-> weak battery :XD: ), there won't be any problem with too heavy equipment
